Millwall has appointed former Chelsea and Everton assistant manager Joe Edwards as its head coach.
He was part of Frank Lampard’s squad at both Premier League clubs and has been in England’s under-20 squad on an interim basis since August.
Edwards, 37, replaces the Championship club in place of Gary Rowett, who left by mutual consent on Oct. 18.
Millwall sit 18th in the table, having suffered two problems in four games since his departure.
Rowett held the position at The Den for four years, guiding them to the first phase of each season, but failed to secure a place in the play-offs.
The southeast London side had been eyeing former Southampton and Luton manager Nathan Jones for the job, Edwards will now take charge of the team for the first time in Sheffield on Wednesday and Saturday.
Edwards has hired Andy Myers as an assistant, while Adam Barrett, who was interim coach after Rowett’s departure, and fellow coach Andy Marshall will remain with the team on the scene.
“Even though I’ve been coaching for a long time, a lot of people know this is my first managerial assignment as a head coach,” Edwards told Millwall’s website.
“Over the years, on other levels, you’d like to have the opportunity to step up.
“To do this at a club like this, to be head coach of Millwall Football Club, I don’t take it lightly. I’m excited. “
Edwards spent 27 years at Chelsea and became manager at the age of 16 after being retained at the club as a young player.
He rose through the ranks to become Chelsea’s under-18 manager for a two-year spell in 2014, when the Blues won the FA Youth Cup twice.
He signed up for the senior squad and became an assistant to Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, helping the Blues win the Champions League in 2021, before moving to Everton in January 2022 to sign for Lampard.
Edwards, England’s interim under-20 boss this year.
“With Joe, I’m excited. I think it’s very forward-thinking and has positive concepts about the progression we can make as a club,” Millwall chairman James Berylson told the club’s website.
“It’s a painstaking process, where no stone is left unturned, and Joe is engaging, attentive and impressive throughout, and I felt like we could have a productive relationship together.
“We welcome Joe and Andy to The Den with open arms and look forward to seeing the impact they can have on and off the pitch in what we hope will be a long relationship with Millwall. “
