It has been reported that the television agreement with the Chinese broadcaster PPTV has been resceded due to a default of 160 million pounds.
A Premier League statement read: “The Premier League confirms that it has terminated its Premier League policy agreements in China with the licensee in this territory.”
In November 2016, the Premier League signed its largest outdoor television deal in the UK when Suning Holdings paid 564 million pounds to broadcast matches for 3 years, from 2019 to 2022, through its PPTV virtual channel.
The loss of profits for the Premier League will be significant and can have an effect on clubs’ finances.
Suning’s default coincided with the coronavirus pandemic, which forced a sporting closure.
