FIVE-THREE thousand Spanish flags gave the impression on Sunday afternoon on the banks of the Guadalquivir in Seville.
Each flag represented one of Spain’s Covid-19 patients during a tribute organized through the National Association of Coronavirus Victims (Anvac), similar to those already held in Madrid and Valencia.
Flags stretching from the Alamillo Bridge to San Jerónimo were installed on the left bank of the Guadalquivir through 170 volunteers, many of whom had recovered from the Covid-19 or lost one enjoyed by the pandemic.
Although they were alerted in advance, they were aware of the precise location until the last minute.
They worked since 6 a. m. to position the 53,000 flags, 3 thousand more than those used in Madrid or Valencia.
Anvac President Jaime Sanchez lamented the new flags: “Unfortunately, the National Statistical Institute has more fatalities,” he told La Sexta.
“Behind these figures is a circle of relatives who mourn the loss of a father,” Sanchez said, calling for justice for the deceased.
The Seville City Council later showed that the organizers did have permission to place the flags.
Anvac announced that after a minute’s silence and reading a manifesto at the Olympic Roundabout adjoining the Alamillo Bridge, the volunteers would leave the “in the best condition”.
