NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) – A Nashville boy unknowingly sold a call of dominance to Washington’s new football team.
A few weeks ago, the NFL franchise officially known as the Washington Redskins replaced his call-up to the Washington football team. The team’s main sponsor, FedEx, called for a replacement amid a social movement to Native American culture.
Before the team’s call was announced, Cal Spears contacted through a GoDaddy.com, a company that works with calls and online page hosting.
Spears said he filed $3,500 for a domain call he bought in 2012, WashingtonFootball.com.
“I bought a number of school football fields,” Spears said. “So it’s a state call plus football. Alabamafootball.com, Tennesseefootball.com, some basketball too. Tennessee Basketball, Kentucky BasketballArray… The concept to create a type of online network page for school fans. Maybe sell equipment, e-commerce. “
Spears said at the time that he was interested in some of the SEC’s biggest names, such as Floridafootball.com. Washington came here only as a component of the package.
Spears is the CEO of RotoGrinders, an online sports page. He said he and his team were too busy preparing for the start of the major leagues. I didn’t know who contacted him about the call from the online page and why.
“So after very little come and go, ” said Spears. “We chose a much higher value than I had paid. A much higher value than I had paid at the time. I don’t wonder too much if it’s the NFL team, why they’ll pay. What would be a billion dollars? deductible payment.”
He ended up taking $10, 000 for the inheritance. Later, Spears raised the factor to whom she had sold the domain on Twitter.
Then, the next day, Washington announced its new Washington football team.
“The ad made sure there wasn’t a new team name,” Spears said. “There is no new pet. It’s just the Washington football team. I sold a property to Dan Snyder”(the owner of the team).
Spears said she was thinking about giving cash once she knew what had happened.
“If it’s the team, I’d give the proceeds to a smart Native American charity,” he said.
After refreshing the page the day, WashingtonFootball.com still populated the old Redskins website.
Spears donated the $10,000 to the American Indian College Fund, a nonprofit that grants scholarships to Native Americans.
Spears said she’s not afraid she won’t make any more money. He’s happy to be able to help someone else.
“I don’t. I’m happy to have the story,” he said.
