Abel Xavier: ”I can look the evertonians in the eye and say I’ve given my best

Abel Xavier counts his two and a half years with Everton as one of the happiest periods of a busy race.

When Xavier talked about Everton’s day show in September 2018, the former Portuguese foreign defender made an investment in his great pleasure in football and life to unify Mozambique as manager of the counterattack football team.

Football has made Abel Xavier a very man.

And now he stores his wealth in Mozambique, to “unite a nation.”

We deserve from the beginning that the coin that Xavier possesses in buckets is counted with wisdom and wisdom.

He’s not motivated by “the things of life.”

“I want to tell you everything I think is important,” Xavier says.

“I made my football career an agent.

“People don’t believe me … but I have the idea that the only thing you exhibit as a footballer is yourself.

“Sticks will do if you do things right and you’re a wonderful professional.”

Xavier is a company that bets on football.

He sees the game from a serious point of view, which he can see far below its surface.

Xavier’s moment kicked off Everton after leaving PSV Eindhoven in 1999 came here in a Merseyside derby that the Blues won 1-0 at Anfield.

Ask him about the game and start with the diapers.

“I played a lot of derbies in 8 other countries,” Xavier says.

“Football is a wonderful life.

“They inform you a lot; mentality, language, religion, culture. You’re a very competent person.

“The derby matches at Merseyside are special, you have to feel them.

“If you have a chance to worry as a player or coach, you never will.”

Abel Xavier enters through the door of his house. It’s a torrid night last August in Mozambique.

“You called at the right time, ” said Xavier. The first of the everton Day program to play the club’s former defender discovered it on a reconnaissance mission, the most prominent guy in a crowded football stadium and, if background noise is a good and excitable indicator, in what he proudly calls “my home country.” . ” ».

Xavier came home.

Back at the sanctuary of his circle of relatives, Xavier begins to talk about football without being invited.

“I can’t wait to get in the way of Everton, where I had such a good time,” he says. “They have wonderful enthusiasts and it’s a circle of family environment. Now there’s a lot of progress on your team.”

“They have a vision for the future.”

Xavier himself of what awaits us is full of aspirations.

It’s a symbol that’s been forming in your brain for over a decade.

He is the director of the Mozambique national team and, in the two and a half years since he accepted the position, has achieved a change of fortune on the ground.

If Xavier stepped forward with his effects achieving his broader and truly broader ambitions, he would have failed in his self-determined mission.

“When you’re a coach, you have the results,” Xavier says.

“But this task is about me, whether I win or lose.

“It’s about going out so others can go on.

“If you only think about the results, don’t expand or create anything.

“I’m doing another one of any coach before in this country.

“We are working with the youth progression programme and to stabilize Mozambique’s football.

“There are many in Africa who lack structures in their social and educational environment.

“Sport is for integration into society. We have so many young people who lack direction.

“You’re multitasking in this job. You’ll have to be resilient, strong and persistent to make your mark.

“The mission of Mozambique has been in my trap for 10 years, however, you want to know when you can do what you think it wants to be done.

“When you see a replacement in the mindset, your paintings will be absorbed correctly and understood.

“Football will unite the country, it is the national team.

“With football you can do a lot for the well-being of people.

“I’m going to fight a new generation of players now.

“When you look back at the African Portuguese players, most of the greats were from Mozambique.

“Eusebio, the great.

“Now there are no Mozambican players. What happened?

“I need to get out.”

For what drives Xavier, you have to delve into his past.

He left Mozambique, a country on the brink of civil war, in 1976, to settle with his parents in Portugal, where “integration into society is very difficult”.

“I played football in the street and when I was eight I started at sporting Lisbon’s academy,” says Xavier.

“I was 10 years old and a teenager with rules and discipline.

“Football has me.

“All I know is football. Discipline and rules, how to be a footballer and a father. Everything.”

Xavier’s professional advancement in other parts of the capital, with Estrela de Amadora.

He was promoted to the Portuguese Primeira Liga with the unre announced club in 1993 and the following season won the championship with Benfica.

Xavier has been a fundamental figure with the top club in the country and a foreigner in his own right.

And then, in 1995, he put everything at stake when he moved to Bari in Italy.

“There are no regrets, ” says Xavier.

“Many coaches and players have runs, but they would come back and make a difference.

“I felt that my career was well lived and that I would not replace anything.

“Things came out naturally. It’s not about where I wanted to go, it’s about the clubs I was looking for.

“I looked for it somewhere where I felt important.”

After a year in Italy, Xavier signed for the Spanish national team Real Oviedo where, at the time of the season, he led through the respected Uruguayan Oscar Tabárez.

He spent a season with Dutch PSV Bobthrough Robson before being drawn to Everton through Walter Smith.

“All my coaches are my references to me,” says Xavier, who had a complicated date with his last club manager, Ruud Gullit on LA Galaxy.

“You have to be aware of the smart things that coaches have brought you and why the other coaches haven’t worked so well.

“You’ll be informed analyzing everything. I had a wonderful training school.”

Xavier considers Smith one of his tutors.

Everton was among the 12 issues of his career as a peripototic player.

“I played on a team with a strong bond,” he said. “Walter Smith was looking for proud players.

“I’m a young player in a strong team with other characters.

“In Everton, fans feel it that way … you play for them.

“They made it a moment for me.

“Because of the fans, you felt, “I’m in the place.”

“I have felt welcome in Everton, as a user and as a player.

“I was pleased to go to education every day. I felt vital as an Everton player and I think I made an impact.

Xavier played matches for the club before leaving in January 2002.

Your next destination will never please the Evertonians.

And Xavier knew it.

So joining Liverpool is a complex decision?

“It’s very, very difficult,” Xavier says. “I tried to stay longer but it wasn’t possible. The Everton wasn’t as strong financially as it is today and I can’t extend my contract, which is six months away.”

“When we left, I think everything was done correctly.

“Liverpool looked for me a lot and I’m a pro.

“But you’ll have to respect the criticisms of the hobby.

“I can look the evertonians in the eye and say I did my until my last day at the Club.

“I can go into town and walk with my head held high.

“I am very proud that any of the clubs, I hope, respect me and that other people have good memories of me. This is not the case.”

When he thinks more broadly, given the nature of “having shoes, traveling” from his 18 years as a professional footballer, Xavier is going through the outside of his career.

“I played with Champions League clubs: Benfica, PSV, Liverpool, Galatasaray and Roma,” says Xavier, who also represented Hannover 96 in Germany and the Premier League Middlesbrough before completing in Los Angeles.

“But you don’t have compatibility in your career depending on the competitions you’re competing in, you have compatibility in the way you end up with all your clubs.

“Everything applicable and important.

“And now I can my country, and football will grow in my country.

That football can be an educational procedure and more than winning trophies.

“I didn’t go to college or go to college or go to a degree, but football gave me a lot of wisdom about a lot of things in the world.

“I can raise a circle of relatives through football.

“I can teach my children and speak 8 languages through football.

“I don’t feel through the curtains the things of life.

“It’s not worth paying for attachment to other people and feelings. You can’t buy those things.”

Xavier’s broader attitude deserves not to be with a lack of competitive advantage.

He admits that Portugal’s good luck at the French European Championships in 2016 erased the injury suffered by his “golden generation” for 16 years following his debatable semi-final defeat to the French at the 2000 tournament.

Xavier conceded the decisive penalty in Portugal’s 2–1 defeat and was barred from playing in UEFA competitions for six months following his reaction to the referee’s decision.

“You have to leave the afterlife in the right position, but it was a relief when Portugal won the European Championship,” Xavier says.

“We were the team of the 2000 tournament and thought we deserved to win it.

“Revenge is not the right word … but winning with the generation, for everyone on our team, we were very happy.”

Xavier’s next foreign purpose is to take Mozambique to his first African National Cup final since 2010.

They won their first qualifying match 1-0 in Namibia, thanks to a purpose in the 90th minute.

Such a drama, however, is a small one in a much larger story.

“I’m improving my career and I’m very special in construction because of my roots,” Xavier says.

“I left Mozambique as a child and came back here as a man.

“I in a poor country, in the neighborhoods, then I did my career abroad, and now I’m back in the neighborhoods, in a country that wants help. That’s great.

“I’m building a house.

“But now I’m solidifying the base, and I hope the roof doesn’t fall on my head.”
