Aberdeen acting boss Peter Leven Dons tells some ‘truths’ after Dundee defeat

Interim manager Peter Leven said he had delivered “truths at home” to Aberdeen at a team assembly less than 24 hours after the defeat at Dundee.

The Dons’ damaging defeat is just three points off the relegation play-off position with nine games remaining.

Leven that captain Graeme Shinnie also held separate talks with the team on Thursday in a bid to pull the Dons out of their Premiership freefall.

Aberdeen’s league winless run was extended to several games in their 1-0 defeat at Dundee on Wednesday.

Leven revealed that he had studied the video with the Dundee defeat footage team in an effort to isolate what it was and fix it.

It also forced the Dons to watch footage of games they played well in this season in an effort to motivate them to reflect their levels.

The interim coach will ask for an immediate reaction after the Dons face Motherwell in the league on Saturday.

He said, “The players had certain truths, I’m going to lie, and then Shinnie talked to them alone.

“We showed them the video on Thursday of where they could have done something else against Dundee.

“We have a loop of things we want to show.

“The right things to show them what they’ve done before, to show them how smart they are.

“But we also had to show them from Wednesday things they want to improve on. “

Aberdeen have suffered just five problems out of 33 imaginable failing to win a Premiership match since returning from winter break in January.

Asked if he expected a reaction to the Dundee defeat, Leven replied: “I hope so.

“Actions speak louder than words.

“There’s no point, you have to pass out and do it. “

There was a respite from the Premiership horror spectacle when the Reds beat Kilmarnock 3-1 in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals last weekend.

Veteran Neil Warnock, 75, stepped down as interim boss after that cup loss to Killie, after just 33 days at the helm of Pittodrie.

Leven was then assigned the position on an interim basis while Pittodrie’s board of directors searched for a new manager.

Interviews have been conducted with applicants this week and the Dons aim to appoint a new manager for the upcoming overseas holiday.

How can a team succeed on heights opposite Kilmarnock and then sink to depressing levels in Dundee a few days later?

Leven said: “We’ve looked at it and the bread and butter of this club is work.

“Also a fighting spirit and making us show enough angles with the ball.

“I don’t think we did that because sometimes our passes were bad.

“The application and preference will also have to be maximum in each and every one of the matches.

“That was very frustrating on Wednesday.

“I didn’t think the passes were there, we didn’t do enough angles with the ball and there wasn’t enough courage. “

The Aberdeen side rebuilt themselves expensively in last summer’s transfer window with thirteen new signings secured.

Having woefully underperformed in the Premiership, with just six wins in 29 games, how can that be achieved, if at all?

Leven said, “Have one-on-one and organizationArray

“Talk to them, see what motivates them and what I want to use to motivate them.

“I have a wonderful captain in Shinnie and Jonny (Hayes) and the other veteran players who run this locker room and know the expectations of this club.

“The fans are the root of the expectations of this club.

“They let you know when you’re not doing well and that tells you that too. “

In Aberdeen’s last clash with Motherwell, the Reds won 3-0 after 30 minutes in Warnock’s third game at the helm.

Leven, 40, played a key role in the tactical adjustments made to the 3-0 that were the catalyst for a reaction to draw 3-3.

He said: “We all came here in combination to replace tactics.

“Obviously things weren’t working out and we talked about going up to four.

“Neil had arrived.

“We were struggling to go 3-0 and as a team we had a close discussion and we felt like those adjustments could bring us another situation. “

“He painted and will paint in Motherwell on Saturday. “
