The halfway point of the Champions League semi-final is a rematch of last year’s semi-final between Manchester City and Real Madrid. The other aspect is an all-Italian semi-final; the last time those two teams met in the Champions League quarterfinals two decades ago, when Milan beat Inter to qualify for the final against Juventus.
The first leg of the Milan vs Inter semifinal will take place on May 10 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in San Siro, Milan, Italy, and the current match will take place on May 16, also at San Siro. Milan and Inter are underdogs in the tournament when they momentarily finished in their respective groups, then Inter eliminated the No. 2 Porto and Milan eliminated seeded Napoli to qualify for the semifinals.
In a pre-match press conference (via ACMilan. com), Milan head coach Stefano Pioli said he believes his team can be at this point.
“We eliminated Tottenham and Napoli; You can eliminate anyone. Inter are favourites for some, but we need to take a look at it. It should be borne in mind that this match is played in 180 minutes. We were in wonderful form in the Champions League. Now we will look to take another step to triumph in the final; it would be incredible,” Pioli said.
He added: “The team has never lacked spirit, but the brain is not enough if we don’t have the right quality and care. The game will be challenging but entertaining. I tried to instill determination in my team but also the joy of betting a game like this. . . The atmosphere at San Siro is expected to be electric. Enthusiasts will push us to give everything from the beginning to the end.
Meanwhile, Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi said in his pre-match press conference (via Reuters) that his team knew what was at stake and was “very focused”.
“We will have to be very smart in using the head when necessary, because in such vital matches there are unforeseen events: in recent matches we have been smart in being lucid,” Inzaghi said. “It’s a very vital match as other finals have been. It’s not a derby, it’s the derby. We know what it means to us, to the club, to the fans, even to me. But I’m quite serene, I saw the guys very focused.
AC Milan’s first leg against Inter Milan will kick off on Wednesday, May 10 at 3 p. m. m. , ET, on CBS Sports and Paramount Plus.
