Ajax could pip Tottenham to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg signing

According to reports in England and Holland on Wednesday, Ajax are in the race to sign Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Ajax’s main rival for Hojbjerg are Tottenham. Spurs have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old Danish international for some time.

There are several reasons to believe Ajax could beat Spurs to the transfer.

Firstly, Ajax will play Champions League football next season while it’s looking highly doubtful that Tottenham will.

Secondly, if Hojbjerg moved to Amsterdam, he’d team up with manager Erik ten Hag. They used to work together at Bayern Munich.

Additionally, Ajax and Southampton have previously done business in 2016 and 2018 when Dusan Tadic moved between the clubs.

However, the Telegraph still believe that “Tottenham are in pole position to land the Southampton midfielder,” although the paper fail to bring any concrete evidence to back up that assertion.

The writing has been on the wall for a while that Hojbjerg will leave Southampton at the end of the season.

It’s been widely reported that the Dane has rejected the opportunity to sign a contract extension with the club.

Hojbjerg will be a free agent in 12-months time, meaning Southampton need to sell the midfielder this summer if they are to recoup a transfer fee.

Indeed, Southampton manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl, has stripped Hojbjerg of the club’s captaincy and given it to James Ward-Prowse. Hasenhuttl has said:

We had an agreement, and (I) made clear that if you decide not to extend your contract, you will not be captain of this team.

He knows that he is an important player for this club. I think we have found a good agreement.

According to the Telegraph, Hojbjerg could be sold for £15 million.

The Telegraph also mention Everton as a possible suitor for Hojbjerg. Readers are told, “Everton have also shown interest in Hojbjerg”.

However, there doesn’t seem to be any real suggestion that the Toffees will manage to convince Hojbjerg to sign.
