Ajax are understood to have already made contact with Jordan Henderson’s camp in a bid to sign the midfielder on loan during this transfer window.
Dutch sources claim that Ajax have a realistic chance of signing the England international, who are looking to shorten his five-month stay at Saudi Arabian Pro-League club Al-Ettifaq.
There has been interest in him across Europe, and it is believed that a Bundesliga club has also been in touch. Premier League clubs are keeping an eye on the situation but, as Telegraph Sport revealed, Henderson could have to pay more than £3m in tax to HMRC if he returns to the UK to paint this month.
This suggests his most productive option, financially, would be to stay out of England for the entire financial year and Ajax are looking for an experienced midfielder who can provide leadership to their young team.
It is believed the 33-year-old, whose signing prompted condemnation from LGBT+ groups who claimed he had lost the respect of a community he had championed, has not enjoyed the move but is also primarily concerned about losing his place in the England squad for this summer’s European Championship.
Sources close to Ajax have reported that Henderson is looking for the right club and not the most lucrative move. Saying it would be for Ajax to rival, even remotely, in terms of matching their £350,000-a. a week’s salary at Al-Ettifaq and that a significant compromise would have to be reached.
Henderson’s only hope of leaving the Saudi league in this transfer window is understood to be to appeal directly to his club when he returns next month. Even then, his move will probably be just a loan, but Ajax are hopeful that talks can take place.
