The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Monday that it will replace the typeface used on its blouses with one of the blouses’ numbers compared to a Nazi symbol.
The number 4 worn by the players of the national team would resemble the insignia of the elite corps of the Nazi SS.
“The DFB verifies numbers from 0 to nine and then sends numbers 1 to 26 to UEFA for review,” the football organization said in a statement.
“Neither side saw any proximity to Nazi symbolism in the artistic process,” the DFB said.
However, the sports body said it needed to “provide a platform for debate”.
“Together with our partner 11teamsports we will expand a choice design for the number 4 and coordinate it with UEFA,” the DFB said.
Equipment supplier Adidas on Monday afternoon removed customization features from the German team’s jersey, German Bild reported.
Personalization of names and numbers was not available when an AFP reporter visited the site on Monday afternoon.
The jerseys with the number 44 were at the center of controversy, as the number allegedly closely resembled the SS logo.
Deliveries of T-shirts already ordered with this product have been halted, reports Bild.
The new logo was used in recent friendlies against France and the Netherlands, as Germany prepares to host the men’s European Football Championship in June and July.
The DFB caused a stir last month when it announced it would upgrade Adidas as a gadget supplier from 2027.
The German gadget manufacturer, which has supplied the national team since the 1950s, will give way to American sportswear giant Nike.
