Liverpool manager Trent Alexander-Arnold has insisted Liverpool have had a smart season despite a lackluster finish to Jurgen Klopp’s latest run at Anfield.

When the Merseysiders won the English League Cup in February, they were expecting an unprecedented quadruple of trophies.

But Liverpool then lost to bitter rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup, then dropped out of the Europa League before disappearing into the race for the Premier League name for two damaging weeks in April.

As a result, Klopp denied the fairytale end to his Liverpool career, but for Alexander-Arnold, a third-place finish in the Premier League and, with it, a return to the Champions League, is proof of the club’s progress.

“It’s been a smart season, built on the previous one, we took a step forward as a team, we fought for the title, we went far and we took a step forward,” Alexander-Arnold told Liverpool’s website.

“Every time you get better, it means it’s a smart season. Take the positives and move on and you’ll do it again next season. “

The 25-year-old, a candidate for England’s Euro 2024 squad, is suffering frustrations after two months out with a knee injury.

“Of course, it’s never good to be injured. You have to play as many games as possible and help the team, but those things happen infrequently,” he added.

“It’s a complicated time, a moment that taught me to be patient and a complicated moment. It just makes you stronger, enjoy the moments when you have compatibility and can play. “
