Alexander Isak goes from 0 to hero as he repairs massive failure against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak made amends for his failure this season by opening the scoring in a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Magpies were warned that Kylian Mbappe and his Les Parisiens teammates had revenge on their minds following their 4-1 drubbing at St James’ Park,.

And after a nervous start, Eddie Howe’s side started the game slowly and deserved to take the lead in the 12th minute through Isak.

Miguel Almirón brilliantly beat Achraf Hakimi on the left wing before sending the ball to the Swedish center forward in the penalty area.

But he failed to direct his effort towards the target when he smashed the ball over the bar to surprise former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew.

Speaking on talkSPORT commentary, he said: “You can’t miss those chances at this level! It was such a big chance and it wasn’t even a difficult chance!”

Pardew then said of Isak’s performance: “The one player that hasn’t played well so far is Isak.”

However, he was available to score in the 24th minute when Gianluigi Donnarumma cancelled out a weak shot from Almiron.

He had the undeniable task of nailing into the empty net the first Toon star to score an away goal in the Champions League since Alan Shearer in 2003.

Commenting on his goal, Pardew said: “Unbelievable! Magnificent shot from Almirón and he’s the goalkeeper, what is he doing?

“He’s pushed it out to Isak and all he’s got to do is slot it home.”

Newcastle were a minute away from holding on for all three points, which would have lifted them up to second heading into their final Group F match against AC Milan.

But Kylian Mbappe scored a dramatic penalty in the seventh minute of injury time following a controversial VAR call after Tino Livramento was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball.

It means that Newcastle have to beat Milan and hope Dortmund get a result against PSG to advance into the last-16.
