All You Need To Know Ahead Of Friday’s UEFA Champions League Draw

The draw for the Champions League is set for this Friday, July 10 in Nyon, Switzerland, at 6:00 EST. The competition was brought to a standstill by Covid-19 in mid-March and UEFA was forced to delay its plans to complete the competition until there was clarity regarding domestic competitions.

Half of the 8 qualifiers have already been decided with Atalanta, RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain all securing a place in the draw for the last 8 before the shutdown.

Four ties have yet to be completed. First leg scores in brackets.

Manchester City (2) vs. Real Madrid (1)

Bayern Munich (3) vs. Chelsea (0)

Juventus (0) vs. Lyon (1)

Barcelona (1) vs. Napoli (1)

The games will be played on August 7 or August 8 at venues that must still be confirmed. Clearance from national and local health authorities must be in place for the games to be played at the original venues. If the required clearances are not forthcoming the second legs will be relocated to stadia in Porto and in Guimarães.

An unprecedented situation has led UEFA to a unique format. It will be an open draw for the quarter and semi-finals, and teams from the same country can be drawn against each other. All games will be straight knockout played to a same day conclusion and all games from the quarters through to the final will be played in Lisbon, Portugal.

The quarterfinals will start on August 12 and there will be a game a day through to August 15. The semifinals will be played on August 18 and 19 with the final on August 23 at Benfica’s home stadium, the Estádio do Sport. All games will kick off at 15:00 EST.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich +300; Paris Saint-Germain +450; Barcelona +700; Atletico Madrid +1200; RB Leipzig +1400; Juventus +1600; Atalanta +2000; Real Madrid +3300; Napoli +8000; Lyon +10000; Chelsea +50000.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have each scored 2 goals in the competition so far. The two superstars have dominated scoring in the Champions League over the last 11 seasons and no other player has finished as the outright top scorer in that time.

The women’s competition has fewer wrinkles than the men’s version. The quarter-final draw was made in November 2019 after the completion of the round of 16 and before the Covid-19 shutdown. The changes for the quarterfinals and beyond relate to format and location.

The remainder of the competition will be played as a straight knockout tournament with the games to be played from August 21-30 at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao and the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastián.

Lyon is going for their 7th Champions League title and for a 5th in a row.
