ALVARO FERNANDEZ has completed a stunning loan move to Benfica.
And Manchester United have reportedly inserted THREE clauses into his contract.
Fernandez, 20, joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid in 2020 and was shaping up to be a long-time star at Old Trafford.
But the former player on loan from Preston and Granada has now finished his at Portuguese champions Benfica.
Fernandez will play for the European giants until the summer.
But if he plays 50 per cent of his money as a starter, he will have to pay a £5 million clause to make the deal permanent.
Fabrizio Romano claims this is one of three clauses that United have inserted into Fernandez’s loan.
It’s time to re-sign Fernandez for a steady paycheck if he becomes a world-class defender.
And the third entitles the Red Devils to get the best resale rates and at the same time gives them the right to accept successful offers from other clubs.
That means Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company will be keeping a close eye on Fernandez over the next five months.
He has never appeared at the senior level for United, despite being on the bench on several occasions.
Fernández’s first loan spell at Old Trafford saw him spend the season at Preston.
He made 39 league appearances and was expected to make an impact on Erik ten Hag.
But Fernandez instead joined Spanish side Granada and made 12 LaLiga appearances before being recalled last week.
Fernandez now hopes to succeed at Benfica, which won the Primeira Liga name last season.
The reigning champions are lately separated by one point, Sporting Lisbon.
Benfica already have former Man United player Angel Di Maria, while former Man City ace Nicolas Otamendi is in charge.
United hope to build good relations with Benfica amid reports they are interested in a mega-money deal for teen midfield superstar Joao Neves.
