E-commerce Amazon plans to load two new distribution centers and five last-mile “delivery stations” in the greater Toronto area and the greater Golden Horseshoe area, the company said Wednesday morning.
The company will open a million-square-foot distribution center in Ajax, east of Toronto, and an 885,000-square-meter distribution center in Hamilton, west of the city.
Together, they will employ another 2500 people when they open in 2021.
Once the hubs are operational, they will increase the number of Amazon fulfillment centers in Ontario to 10, with six more in Canada.
“We are excited to continue to expand our Ontario operations with our latest distribution centers in Hamilton and Ajax,” Sumegha Kumar, Director of Canadian Customer Management Operations for Amazon Canada, said in the announcement.
“We have been very successful with Ontario’s talented workforce, and we look forward to creating another 2,500 full-time jobs at competitive wages from day one. “
The Hamilton facility will result in the hiring of more than 1,500 people to paint across Amazon Robotics to select, package and ship small parts to consumers, such as books, electronics and toys.
At Ajax, more than 1,000 workers will pack and send purchases from major visitors, including sports equipment, garden furniture, fishing rods, puppy food, kayaks, bicycles and other family items.
Amazon is also adding new delivery stations near Stoney Creek, Kitchener, Vaughan, and Toronto (Etobicoke and Scarborough).
The Etobicoke has already been introduced and the Kitchener will be presented at the end of this year. Stoney Creek, Scarborough and Vaughan will perform in 2021.
These stations are made up of giant shipments from Amazon distribution and sorting centers, and then upload packages to cars for delivery to customers.
In months, Amazon has made major additions to its Canadian logistics network.
Lately, the company is building a multi-tier warehouse in Ottawa, which could grow to 2. 7 million square feet, according to published reports. The installation, which is Amazon’s current distribution center in the country’s capital, is scheduled to open in 2021.
The corporation has just completed the structure of its first distribution center in Quebec. Announced in November 2019, the installation of the municipality of Lachine will employ approximately three hundred people and opened in July.
The company also recently completed a million-square-foot order processing center in Leduc County, just outside Edmonton. ONE Properties and TD Greystone Asset Management have teamed up to expand this property.
Amazon lately employs more than 21,000 full- and part-time workers at centers, corporate offices and corporate progression centers in Canada.
Between 2010 and 2019, the company says it has invested more than $11 billion in Canada, adding infrastructure and workers’ compensation.
