The House of the Assembly of the State of Anambra on Friday suggested that Governor Willie Obiano intensify his efforts to combat rape and paedophiles and provide more facilities for rape victims.
The solution followed a proposal submitted by Urgent Public Importance Issues through Mr. Cater Umeh, representing the Constituency of Aguata l.
Umeh said there was a desire for greater counseling and providing health, mental, psychological, monetary and legal to victims.
He said these facilities would help them reintegrate into society.
“Reports of rape and paedophiles are in vogue in our society. There are stories about how young people have been sexually abused, assaulted and women aspirants have been forced to deal with horrible experiences.
“This is an act of barbarism that opposes everyone; young or old, male or female, has a higher rate of occurrence among women.
“Rape is an act that physically, psychologically and sociologically hurts those who suffer from it. Victims of this act suffer from depression, panic attack, guilt, isolation, aggression, dishonor and suicide.
“Have fitness problems, such as vaginal bleeding or infection,
Sexual disorders, unwanted pregnancies, inflammation of the vagina, HIV/AIDS and even death occur as a result of this act,” he said.
Umeh noted that many laws and sanctions such as incarceration, castration, fines were already measures to curb risk in the country.
However, he said that the well-being and long-termness of the sick deserve to be taken into account in the same way.
Also speaking, Mr. Smart Okafor (Nnewi North) called for a constant media awareness through the Ministry of Women’s and Children’s Affairs about the risks of rape and the desire of victims to speak.
House Speaker Uche Okafor is also an anti-humanity crime and a violation of victims’ rights.
“As a result of the rape, many victims committed suicide, their sense of life was replaced and they struggled to reintegrate into society. This is a concern.
“As legislators, we will have to fight against this barbaric act because it can happen to our daughter, sister or someone close to us,” Okafor said.
At the same time, in a resolution, the House suggested that Governor Obiano ask the Ministry of Public Works to remove the contractor guilty of handling the Oyeagu Abagana/Nimo highway in the local government area of Njikoka on the spot.
The solution followed a movement that also presented Questions of Urgent Public Importance through Dr. Pete Ibida, representing the conduct of Njikoka l.
Ibida said the deplorable state of the desert road allocation causes flooding and deep erosion, creating incalculable difficulties for citizens and road users.
