Onana couldn’t cope with Leroy Sané’s effort
Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana admitted his mistake in the 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League cost him dearly.
Erik Ten Hag’s side had started the game well but fell behind in the 28th minute when Leroy Sané’s tame shot from outside the home went over the United goalkeeper.
The problem deflated the visiting team, who temporarily conceded a moment when Jamal Musiala’s brilliant play led him to calmly bring Serge Gnabry home.
“It’s hard. We got off to a great start. After my mistake, we lost the match,” Onana told TNT Sports after the match.
“The team is losing because of that mistake. I have to be informed and strong. I’m pleased with the team’s return.
“I have a lot to prove. My debut in Manchester wasn’t as good, not as I’d like. It was one of my worst matches. We have big ambitions.
“It’s a complicated time. We have to be together and work hard. “
Manchester United managed to give themselves a lifeline, but with Casemiro’s two goals behind the Red Devils can only get to Old Trafford if they waste a single goal.
Onana hasn’t had many starts since arriving in the Premier League this summer, and David De Gea’s replacement was also criticised for his attempt to prevent Nottingham Forest’s opener a few weeks ago.
Only two in the department have conceded more goals than United, who have been in the midst of an injury crisis in the Department of Defence lately.
Analysing the match for TNT Sports, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said he appreciated Onana’s candid post-match interview in which he criticised the goalkeeper’s overall performance.
“I respect him,” Ferdinand said. I lost games, I made mistakes and I refused to communicate it to the media. He showed a clever character and showed that he was made of clever things.
“He’s as confident as you are with his feet, but as a goalkeeper you get paid to come in and make saves.
“It stays there, it’s food and drink for him. He takes it and looks for his next pass. It’s a very, very serious mistake that you have to recover from.
