LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) – Spanish defender Angelio scored two goals to lead Leipzig to a 2-0 win over Istanbul Basaksehir in their first Champions League match on Tuesday.
The attack was played against just under 1,000 enthusiasts after plans were suspended to allow 8,500 enthusiasts due to an increase in the number of local coronavirus infections. Leipzig’s Malian midfielder Amadou Haidara has ruled after returning from outer service with the virus last week.
Enzo Crivelli and Deniz Turk missed the Turkish champion’s first chances before Angelio scored in the minute, Kevin Kampl threw the ball forward and Angelio controlled it and spun it with his first move before shooting to the back right corner with the next one.
The Spanish winger had to wait only 4 minutes for his goal at the moment. Basaksehir’s defence Alexandru Epureanu lost the ball to Yussuf Poulsen, who passed christopher Nkunku. Nkunku passed it on to Angelio, who swept him in front of the helpless Mert Gonok at Basaksehir’s goal. .
He had scored in his last two Bundesliga matches.
Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann brought Hwang Hee-chan for the time being in half, and the South Korean striker could have scored his European debut for Leipzig for a purpose if he had not merely shot in time.
Dayot Upamecano was lucky not to be expelled for a bad shot of Crivelli. Leipzig’s defence had already been admonished in the first half.
Upamecano was also about to score a goal on his team, but Can Kahveci could profit from visitors.
Upamecano ceded to Ibrahima Konaté in ’66, when Nagelsmann also brought Benjamin Henrichs by Dani Olmo.
At this stage, however, the house team was glad to see the victory.
“We have to get better, play even better,” Angelio said.
