Followers of Celtic were subjected to anti-Irish abuse on Wednesday evening as Lazio supporters flew banners mocking the potato famine during their 2-0 Champions League group stage win.
On a night of fire at Rome’s Olympic Stadium, fans of the Italian team unfurled a huge banner among the crowd that read: “The famine is over. Go home, you damn potato eaters. “
That slogan is a riff on a condemned chant used by loyalists and Rangers supporters that has been places on a banned list by Scottish police.

The Lazio ultras also signaled to their rivals “f****** b*******” and asked them if they had showered today.
Prior to kick-off, Lazio supporters were also spotted hurling flares into the away end, with one being lobbed back by Celtic fans in response as riot police rushed to separate the two sets of fans.
Most likely, Celtic fans were still getting a chilly reception in Rome after the Scottish champions themselves mocked Lazio for their alleged fascist links in the opposing organisation match at Celtic Park.
Lazio won last night’s match 2-0 thanks to a belated brace from captain Ciro Immobile, knocking out the Scottish European champions for another season.
