Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann mocked Alexis Sanchez after he missed the penalty against Inter Milan on Wednesday.
Inter were knocked out of the Champions League when Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak held off the consequences of Sanchez and Davy Klaasen before captain Lautaro Martinez fired the last shot over the bar at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Serie A had taken a narrow 1-0 lead in the second leg of the round of 16 and were on their way to the quarter-finals after Federico Dimarco doubled their lead in the 33rd minute.
But Griezmann responded before the end of a tense second half, with substitute Memphis Depay levelling at 2-2 on aggregate to force extra time.
Griezmann had to be sent off in extra time due to injury, but Spanish television left the French foreigner revelling in Sanchez’s lack on the touchline, mocking the former Arsenal and Manchester United star for his mistake.
The striker noticed that he told Rodrigo De Paul “he’s a scumbag, the chilino is a shit”, which in English means “he’s a coward, the Chilean is a coward”.
Asked about Griezmann’s injury after the game, Atletico coach Diego Simeone said: “As long as he could, he was there.
“When he couldn’t stand his legs anymore, he asked for a change. That’s what men do.
Rio Ferdinand praised Atletico and Simeone after the game, saying the players would “follow him through the brick walls. “
“What I love about him is that he creates this culture, an environment that always says,” Ferdinand said.
“Everyone can see the fans. Everyone shows their hobby in other ways, but you’re sure to find out that he’s an amateur man.
“Whether you like his style of play or not, he has an organization of players who are sure to hold on to him through thick and thin. They’ll stick the brick walls on it.
“The way he galvanizes other people, the way he gathers other people around him and tells them we’re going through to get through together, accept it as truth with me, accept it as truth with me, and get it. It hits well above its weight.
Atletico now await their fate ahead of Friday’s Champions League quarter-final draw.
Simeone’s side is one of eight remaining in the Champions League along with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
