VOTING POINTS
When it comes to winning games against ranked teams, Alabama coach Nick Saban is the best.
Even before beating Georgia, Saban held the record for maximum wins against the AP’s top five sensitive groups (now 25) and the top 10 sensitive groups (now 42). Saban’s last win was his 86th, tying Penn State’s Joe Paterno for the all-time high.
Saban has benefited from his coaching career at a time when the ranking is 25 teams, compared to 20, which was the case with paterno’s 46-year career vanguard. The average number of games played in a school football season is also longer than ever. .
But it took Saban only 25 seasons and 318 games in total to match what Paterno did in 548 games. It may be some time before Saban has a chance to break the tie. Alabama hasn’t had another team on its calendar lately.
