AP Top 25 Reality Check: IU and I-State reach historic heights

A more sensible 10 AP school football ticket with Indiana and the state of Iowa is something never seen before.

On Sunday, the Hoosiers and Cyclones No. 10, eighth in the rankings, took two spots in the Top 25 on Sunday, highs that those systems have reached in decades.

The last time Iowa State entered the 10th most sensible in 1992, when the Cyclones reached ninth place after a 6-1 season start that included a surprise in Nebraska, Iowa State finished this season 1-6 and did not qualify.

The normal season is over for those Cyclones (8-2). Your next game will be in the Big 12 championship game against No. 13 Oklahoma.

It’s been even longer since Indiana stood at this level. The Hoosiers reached fourth place in 1969, in their last Rose Bowl appearance. That award is off the table this season because the Rose Bowl hosts a semi-final for school football playoffs. The championship game may still be within your reach, depending on what is happening with the state of Ohio and the minimum rule of play of the conference.

Even if the Hoosiers don’t play for the Big Ten championship, Indiana may be in line for its first major bowl appearance since the Rose Bowl loss to Southern California after the 1969 season.

One of the reasons the AP ballot remains applicable in a school football landscape where the champion is crowned in the playoffs is that nothing else records the history of the game so well.

Neither Indiana nor Iowa State will win the national championship this season, but their special seasons will be revered in the Top 25.
