Dutch winger Arjen Robben will retire at his Groningen education club, announced on Saturday.
After leaving Groningen in 2002, Robben won league titles with PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea and Real Madrid before a decade of incredibly successful with Bayern Munich.
He retired from Bayern a year ago at the age of 35 after helping the club win eight Bundesliga titles as the 2013 Champions League.
The 2010 World Cup finalist said he was fully motivated to return, but he first needed to get in shape.
“I need to return to FC Groningen. At the moment, I’m not sure it’s happening,” Robben said in a video on Groningen’s website.
“What I’m sure of is that my motivation will be 100%. I’m just passing by and I’ll be in the first consultation of the new season.
“Since my dream is to play with a FC Groningen shirt, we’re still there, but you can still dream.
“I was 12 when I joined the Groningen Youth Academy and debuted with them at 16 in opposition to PSV,” said Robben, who explained that a banner he had seen at Groningen Stadium had resonated strongly in it.
“Arjen am your heart, ” he said, so after a glorious 18-year adventure, I’m going home. “
