Arsenal confirm the arrival of Tommy Setford from Ajax to the reshuffle of the goal

Arsenal have sealed the signing of goalkeeper Tommy Setford from Ajax.

Setford arrives for a fee of less than £1m and has signed a four-year contract, with the Gunners keeping him for a further 12 months.

The 20-year-old had entered the final year of his contract with Ajax, who opted to sell him rather than threaten to waste him at the end of the season.

Setford has been signed to the academy but will train with the first team. He will be exposed without delay to first team action as he flies with the team on their tour of the United States.

The youngster, who was once considered Ajax’s number one, joined Arsenal because of the path to first-team opportunities.

Setford is the second teenage goalkeeper Arsenal have signed this summer, having signed Lucas Nygaard from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland. He will enroll in the Gunners’ academy teams.

David Raya, who is lately on holiday after winning Euro 2024 with Spain, officially played for Arsenal earlier this month, after the club activated a £27m option to make his departure from Brentford permanent as planned.

Arsenal have to step up to their goalkeeping duties amid uncertainty over Aaron Ramsdale’s future.

The 26-year-old will also not sign his teammates for pre-season until the end of the summer, following his participation in the European Championship, but he is very much linked to an exit from Arsenal, as he is looking for a normal first job-football team.
