The 21-year-old’s agreement will expire in June 2021, meaning he may have gotten it off this summer.
Leipzig announced on Thursday that the plant would extend its agreement with the Bundesliga until 2023.
The Frenchman’s new agreement would have a release clause of 53 million pounds, to prevent it from skipping for free.
He has been a target for a number of European clubs with Bayern Munich, Manchester United and AC Milan, all on the market for their signing.
Previous reports warned that Leipzig had told interested rossoneri not to worry that Upamecano was heading north of London.
But now he has committed his long journey with Julian Nagelsmann.
Before Upamecano extended his contract, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said: “Upa is an incredible player for us and one of the most sought-after talents in this position in Europe.
“One thing we do know is that we have a very transparent agreement with him and his adviser, that we will let him through.
“We can’t do that as a club.
“So there are two options: make bigger or change. I’m sure we’ll temporarily know which way we’re going.”
The German has already sold prolific forward Werner to Chelsea for 53 million pounds.
And Frank Lampard’s Chelsea would have joined up the race for Upamecano as Antonio Rudiger’s long-term spouse at the centre of the defense.
