Mikel Arteta has praised Arsenal’s capture of Willian and hopes his new signing will “make a difference” with his versatility and experience.
Arsenal showed on Friday the arrival of free agent Willian on a three-year contract, five days after the Brazilian left Premier League rival Chelsea.
Willian, used mainly on the right for Chelsea, also plays left or in a central role and arrives at Emirates Stadium with an impressive list of honours to his credit.
Eyebrows have been lifted for the 32-year-old’s contract, but Arteta believes his team’s first signing in the tight season will be valuable.
“I think he’s a player who can make a difference to us,” Arteta told the club’s official website. “We’ve been following him for a few months.
“We had a transparent goal for ourselves in offensive midfield and in the raid positions, and it’s a player that gives us a lot of versatility: it can play in 3 or 4 other positions.
“He enjoys everything in world football, but he still has the ambition to come here and bring the club in his place.”
“I was inspired by all the discussions I had with him and how much he was looking to come.”
Willian, who has been awarded Arsenal’s 12th jersey, has been voted 70 times across Brazil since his debut in 2011 and has competed in five primary foreign tournaments.
Arsenal manager Edu, who has previously worked with the Brazil national team, maintains Arteta’s confidence that his compatriot can be a great fortune after crossing the London line.
“I know him very well, for a long time because we painted in combination for the Brazilian national team and, of course, I followed him because he played for another club.
“He has many attributes as a person, as a football player, of course, his character. I’m 100 percent sure everyone in the locker room, the fans, Mikel and I will appreciate having Willian on our side.”
