LONDON (AP) – Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will sign a new contract after speaking to the club, coach Mikel Arteta said Thursday.
Aubameyang, 31, arsenal’s wisest scorer for more than two seasons, is out of contract at the end of next season.
“I’m still positive,” Arteta said. “We’ve had very clever discussions with him and his agent, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be making an agreement soon. That’s my feeling again.
“I think he’s very pleased to be able to stay at the club for a long time and I think the others will be very happy with this news.”
Aubameyang has scored 54 goals in Premier League matches since joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match against Liverpool at the Community Shield, the classic raises the curtain for the new season, Arteta also said it’s “pretty positive” for the club to complete the signing of Brazilian central defender Gabriel Magalhaes of Lille.
“As far as Gabriel is concerned, we still can’t announce anything. The deal is not finalized,” Arteta said. “Everyone knows he’s a player we’ve been following for a long time and I hope we can make it.”
Brazilian winger Willian already joined Arsenal in the off-season after his contract with Chelsea expired.
