Atletico Madrid clinched the final spot in this year’s Champions League quarterfinals after securing a dramatic win over last season’s runners-up Inter Milan on Wednesday.
The aggregate score was 2-2 after a rollercoaster match at the Estadio Metropolitano, with the Spaniards winning on penalties 3-2.
Atletico’s hero goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, before Inter captain Lautaro Martinez missed.
“A glorious night. It’s wonderful when you win,” Oblak told TNT Sports after the game. “I’m very, very satisfied with the team because I think we played a wonderful game, we played well.
“I think at the end of the day, consequences are a lottery. You can watch all the videos, you can do everything and then at the end the player makes a decision about where they’re going to shoot, and a lot of times they replace, so I replace as well.
“Today, fortunately, I arrested two of them. I’m satisfied with that. It’s not easy to save a penalty. Sometimes, from the outside it looks simple, but inside it’s not that simple.
Already trailing 1-0 in the first leg in Italy, Atleti found themselves with two goals after Federico Dimarco finished off a fluid collective move in the 33rd minute.
Cheered on by the home fans, the Colchoneros did not panic and scored again two minutes later thanks to the impressive Antoine Griezmann.
Memphis Depay’s delayed goal in the 87th minute forced extra time in which both teams had chances to win.
But with the aggregate score still tied, the match ended in a dramatic penalty shootout in which Atletico kept their cool.
Earlier on Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund beat PSV 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) to secure their place in the last 16 of the festival where they will face Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atleti and PSG.
The quarter-final and semi-final draws will be held on Friday, where the teams will walk their way to the final at Wembley Stadium in London on June 1.
Defending champions Manchester City remain the team that has won all of its Champions League matches this season. Real Madrid are also unbeaten but drew with RB Leipzig in the second leg of the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals on aggregate.
