Austin Peay football team walks across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama

On Friday, members of the Austin Peay team stopped in Selma, Alabama, to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

The Governors were on their way to Montgomery for Saturday night’s FCS Kickoff against Central Arkansas.

“What a wonderful delight in Selma with our student government football athletes!” Austin Peay athletic director Gerald Harrison wrote on Twitter. “It is also wonderful that President Dannelle Whiteside joins us as she crosses the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Today, we all learned a little more about Good Trouble.”

Former Georgia congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis, who died on July 17, one of the prominent activists who crossed the bridge on March 7, 1965. He suffered a fractured skull when the state infantry beat nonviolent protesters as they sought to cross the bridge to raise awareness of racial inequalities in voter registration.
