There was widespread speculation that Baker Mayfield would re-sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after experiencing some sort of career resurgence with them in 2023, but the quarterback is expected to attract interest from many groups. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote Friday that the Buccaneers are the “overwhelming favorite” to bring Mayfield back this offseason, however, the New England Patriots may be a team to watch.
As Fowler points out, Patriots executives Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith were with the Cleveland Browns in 2018 when Mayfield was selected first in the draft. Wolf was recently promoted to New England’s director of player personnel, while Highsmith is also in the personnel rankings.
The Patriots also recently hired Alex Van Pelt as their new offensive coordinator. Van Pelt held the same role with the Browns from 2020 to 2023, so he has enjoyed Mayfield as well.
Mayfield had the best match in Tampa Bay last season. He threw for more than 4,000 yards for the first time in his career and threw a career-high 28 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Mayfield led the Buccaneers to the playoffs, where they dominated the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round before losing to the Detroit Lions.
The Bucs even consulted Mayfield about a big step they took this offseason, so they obviously need to bring him back. At least a few other groups will probably try to get in the way of that happening.
