Marc-André ter Stegen is one of the few Barcelona players who are allowed to keep their heads up after a bad season for the club.
Ter Stegen has performed many correct performances and lately is one of the most productive goalkeepers in the world, despite the defensive weaknesses that have left him.
The Catalan giants have conceded 36 goals this season, with 22 registered at home, worse than the other 3 qualifiers for this year’s Champions League: Real Madrid (22), Atlético de Madrid (26), Sevilla (34).
Ter Stegen is known to have expressed his frustration this season, opposing Slavia Prague in the Champions League in October.
“It’s general to be bored; we haven’t played at the point we can. It’s like we have all three points, but we have to make things right.” Ter Stegen said in October.
Impossible stops and reflexes, which have become a weekly habit of Ter Stegen, have saved Barcelona much worse this season.
The German still has two years of contract left, which Barcelona will be ahead of extending.
In addition to seeking to link Ter Stegen to a longer contract, the priority for Barcelona is to locate a defensive spouse for Gerard Piqué.
Despite having Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet in their ranks, the Blaugrana have struggled to keep the back door closed this season.
Barcelona has controlled 14 blank sheets this season, a very small figure for a team used to winning it all.
