Frieser, 26, a player well known to Reds head coach Gerhard Struber, from his stay in Austria, has reached an agreement until the summer of 2022, subject to foreign approval.
His arrival follows the capture of defenceman Kilian Ludewig, who joined the club on a one-season loan from Red Bull Salzburg.
Frieser, who can operate on the flanks and front, has great delight in his local Austria, making 225 appearances in the divisions.
He participated in Linz’s Europa League crusade last season when his team, such as Sporting Lisbon and AZ Alkmaar, were in a 16-round round opposite Manchester United.
When Frieser signed, Struber said: “Dominik has accomplished wonderful things in Austria and Europe, so I am very happy that he is joining us at Barnsley.”
“He’s got a lot of experience, he’s a player with attributes and non-public characteristics, and I know he’s going to get on this team a lot.
“As my boys continue their arrangements for the new season, I can’t wait to see Dominik join the organization right away and meet his teammates.
Reds CEO Dane Murphy added: “The club is very happy to welcome Dominik Frieser to Oakwell.Gerhard knows Dominik as a player and as a user and there is already a link between the two.
“We look to the future to see this dating grow in the coming months.
“Dominik comes from a LASK Linz club, winning success in both the Austrian Bundesliga and the Europa League.
“The club expects its quality to continue in League, which will make it an addition.”
The Reds winger Jordan Green joined Southend United League 2 on a six-month loan.
