Bayer Leverkusen boss ‘optimistic’ as Xabi Alonso turns down Liverpool job

NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Bayer Leverkusen boss Simon Rolfes is “calm” and “optimistic” that coach Xabi Alonso will spurn positions at Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Liverpool contacted Alonso’s agent on Wednesday and some media outlets have even claimed that the Reds have presented him with a three-year contract.

Alonso is reportedly Liverpool’s number one target to update Jurgen Klopp, who will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich have also made Alonso the most sensible target as they search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel for the 2024-25 campaign.

Alonso has ties to Liverpool and Bayern Munich, having played for either of them before entering global management.

The 42-year-old is one of the most sought-after coaches in world football and has inspired Bundesliga insiders Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rolfes, however, is hopeful that Alonso will be tempted by Liverpool or Bayern Munich this summer.

“I remain calm and optimistic,” Rolfes told the Frankfurter Rundschau. “The most important thing for managers is that they feel comfortable and that they are in the right place.

“Xabi knows what they give him at the club. He’s said it many times. That’s how he works every day with his team and his training team.

Asked about Liverpool opening negotiations with Alonso’s agent, Rolfes added: “There are a lot of subjunctives in the world. Not everyone has to come in.
