Bayer Leverkusen remain unbeaten in 49 games to set a new European record and reach the Europa League final

Bayer Leverkusen scored a sensational last-minute equaliser to book their place in the Europa League final and set a new record of 49 defeats in all competitions.

Leverkusen was in the last point with Benfica with 48 games unbeaten in all competitions, but now holds the most productive record since the arrival of the European competition, according to UEFA.

Xabi Alonso’s side booked their place in the Europa League final after beating Roma 4-2 on aggregate, adding a last-minute goal from Josip Stanisic in the second leg to maintain their unbeaten run.

Roma took the lead thanks to Leandro Paredes’ penalty just before half-time after Jonathan Tah fouled Sardar Azmoun. Paredes scored on a shot in the 66th minute off a handball by Adam Hlozek.

With 8 minutes remaining, a Leverkusen corner baffled the visiting defence, prompting Gianluca Mancini to inadvertently deflect the ball into his own net at the post.

Stanisic then secured Leverkusen’s position in the record books until stoppage time thanks to an equaliser after a deft move in the box.

Leverkusen have already won the name of the Bundesliga and reached the final of the German Cup.

In the final in Dublin on May 22, Leverkusen will face Atalanta, who cruised to a smooth 3-0 win over Marseille for a 4-1 aggregate win.

Ademola Lookman, Matteo Ruggeri and Atalanta’s El Bilal Toure scored for the Italians in their first Europa League final.

Lookman gave Atalanta the lead in the second leg in the 30th minute with a long-range shot past Pao Lopez before allowing Ruggeri to double the lead seven minutes after the break. Toure, a substitute, put the nail in the coffin for Marseille with a goal in the 94th minute.

Atalanta, which will face Juventus in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday, is in fifth place in Serie A and is aiming for a place in Champions League qualifying.
