Bayer Leverkusen has signed right-back Santiago Arias from Atletico Madrid as initial loan with a permanent contract at the end of the campaign.
The 28-year-old struggled to play in his season at Atletico, with 18 matches in all competitions in 2019-20.
Leverkusen, which sold Kai Havertz and Kevin Volland to Chelsea and Monaco respectively, is expected to pay 12 million euros to signal Arias permanently.
He became the signing of the German club from the window after the incorporation of Patrick Schick of Rome with an indefinite contract before this month.
Arias’ arrival was shown on Leverkusen’s official online website on Thursday and the club’s sporting director, Rudi Voller, said: “We have hired a very experienced player who can temporarily upgrade to help us.
“Given the highest number of matches in the coming weeks, it was vital for our team. “
Colombia Arias, who played 51 games for Atletico in all competitions after joining PSV in 2018, enjoys his new challenge in the Bundesliga.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity after two wonderful and fruitful years in Madrid,” he said. “Leverkusen is one of the Clubs of the Bundesliga with a very intelligent reputation in Spain.
“With Atletico in the Champions League, I’ve noticed for myself how to play here. “
Arias had also been linked to Rome and Everton. His departure from Atleti continues to pass from Alvaro Morata to Juventus, while Luis Suárez signed from Barcelona on Wednesday.
