, moves the headquarters of its global polycarbonate operations from the company’s headquarters in Germany to Shanghai. The company is investing more than 3 billion euros in its Shanghai plant in several projects, adding at least a third in its plastics, coatings and adhesives business unit.
Bayer’s polycarbonate (PC) is advertised under the brand name Makrolon. This new billions of euros capital expenditure announced for the Bayer plant in Shanghai will particularly increase the company’s polyurethane (PUR) and PC capacity in China, and the supplier aims to increase its group’s sales in Greater China to around five billion euros through 201-5. Approximately part of those sales will be boosted through its MaterialScience group, the call of its plastics, adhesives and coatings business. To put this in perspective, Bayer MaterialScience’s total sales for fiscal year 2009 were 7.5 billion euros, with sales in Greater China of 2.1 billion euros. The MaterialScience unit is worth 1.2 billion euros.
Among the projects that reap benefits of a soft green with this investment, there will be more than double, to one million tons consistent with the year, its capacity for the precursor material of polyurethane, methylene diisocyany (MDI). In addition, PC capacity will increase to 500,000 tons consistent with the year, to 200,000 tons that exist consistently with the year at the Shanghai site.
