Bayern Munich calculated on Friday that victory in the European Super Cup had given them the record for maximum consecutive victories through a club from one of the continent’s five major leagues.
“For the Munich team, it’s a 23rd win in a row,” the club said on its online page the day after Hansi Flick defeated Sevilla 2-1 in overtime in Budapest.
“No other team in the five most sensible European leagues has controlled such a sequence. So it’s unique, a new record!”
Football statisticians have shown that Carlo Ancelotti’s longest known winning streak is that of Real Madrid, with 22 consecutive matches, between September and December 2014.
Bayern’s career, on the other hand, took place at the end of a season and included a number of primary matches such as the German Cup final and the final rounds of the Champions League, as well as the Super Cup.
“This deserves the utmost respect and recognition. Congratulations to the team and the team as a whole,” President Herbert Hainer said.
The club has praised the way Bayern won.
