MUNICH (AP) – Joshua Kimmich scored the purpose of the victory when Bayern Munich ignored considerations of fit congestion to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 and win the German Super Cup on Wednesday.
Dortmund fought 2-0 to match, before the two goalkeepers made a difference.
Bayern’s Manuel Neuer showed very good reactions to Erling Haaland’s shot in one hand with the Norwegian striker. Dortmund’s substitute goalkeeper, Marwin Hitz, could only stop Kimmich’s shot in the 82nd minute and the midfielder stretched out to kick the rebound while falling.
For Bayern, the resumption raised morale after wasting 4-1 on Hoffenheim on Sunday to end an undefeated 32-game streak and also the third consecutive victory over Dortmund.
Bayern have played five trophies since coach Hansi Flick took the helm in November and won them all, however, all that good fortune has led to further congestion in the already busy 2020-2021 season. The win over Dortmund came just six days after a few other Super Cups, when Bayern beat Sevilla 2–1 in extra time in the opening rite of the UEFA season.
Kimmich’s winner moment, Bayern proposed a rebound after Corentin Tolisso was discovered with an undisputed finish to open the scoring at 18 when Hitz fired his first shot over the bar following an ultra-fast counterattack in the duration of the field.
Bayern made the 2-0 thanks to Thomas Muller’s headbutt at 32 after Dortmund subsidized Alphonso Davies and gave him time to play a perfectly weighted centre to meet Muller at the time of the post.
Haaland returned Dortmund to the game, preparing Julian Brandt to score at 39 and then scoring at 55 on a play that began when Manuel Akanji pulled Lewandowski off the ball in midfield.
Dortmund’s Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney made the last pass for Haaland on this play, however Delaney was later guilty of the winner when he dragged the ball and Kimmich dispossessed him.
Neither team has covered a first-choice team, with Bayern without the injured Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka, while David Alaba is an unused replacement for a muscle problem. US defender Chris Richards replaced Bayern in the 76th minute in his third appearance with the first team.
Dortmund controlled the injured Thorgan Hazard, while titular goalkeeper Roman Boerki and end Jadon Sancho were ill, both tested negative for coronavirus.
It is bibiana Steinhaus’ last match before the retirement, which in 2017 became the first female referee to oversee men’s Bundesliga matches.
