Bayern in Szoboszlai, says Matthaus comparing Red Bull Salzburg star to Puskas

Lothar Matthaus has said Bayern Munich are interested in Dominik Szoboszlai, a player he described as a “gem” being paid to the wonderful Hungarian Ferenc Puskas.

Red Bull Salzburg boy Szoboszlai is all the rage at the moment, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid connected with the 20-year-old.

Bayern’s wonderful Matthaus believes that all of Europe’s most productive clubs are watching a player whose inventory increased last week when he scored a very good solo goal to secure Hungary’s place in next summer’s European Championship.

As the score approached added time, Szoboszlai collected the ball in his own part of the field, led the Icelandic defence before firing into the back corner to seal Hungary’s victory.

Matthaus has links to Hungary and Bayern, having coached the former and played much of his career for the latter, and believes Szoboszlai is out of the no-nonsense drawer.

“It’s a gem,” Matthaus in an interview with Munchner Abendzeitung. “It’s like Kai Havertz.

He may sign up for RB Leipzig in January, but I am convinced that all the most productive clubs in Europe have him on their list, in addition to FC Bayern.

Bayern have no shortage of attacking talent, which this summer with the capture of Leroy Sane from Manchester City.

However, as European champions, Hansi Flick’s team will be well aware of the desire to continue growing, and Szoboszlai turns out to have great potential.

Szoboszlai is at the nascent level of his career, but the Hungarians feel they have a great future on their hands, and Matthaus reveals that the country believes he can be the successor to its most important player, Real Madrid legend Puskas.

“In Hungary, Szoboszlai is already the wonderful Ferenc Puskas,” Matthaus said.

Comparisons to a player who won five league titles with Real Madrid and was named the most productive player of the 1954 World Cup will only add to the pressure on the attacking midfielder.

But if his purpose against Iceland is a barometer, Szoboszlai is able to reach wonderful heights in the game.

Szoboszlai will have to impress even more on Sunday when Hungary faces Serbia in the Nations League.
