Michael Oliver was appointed referee for Bayern Munich’s clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, just days after his controversy at the Merseyside Derby.
The England referee criticized Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for failing to punish Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk in the penalty area, forcing the Dutch defender to injure his knee ligaments.
Oliver did not award a penalty as Van Dijk was knocked out in the preparation of the challenge, however, the defender is expected to miss this season’s maximum due to the incident.
