BC Hydro has been fined $710,000 after WorkSafeBC inspectors found damaged ventilation equipment and “deficiencies” to protect workers from “welding fume hazards” at its Site C hydroelectric dam near Fort St. John.
According to a WorkSafeBC inspection report seen via Glacier Media, the app complied with engineering plans and safety protocols to keep employees safe.
The painters’ protection and fitness company said the company that had been hired to do the welding work “did not have a good enough plan for exposure to welding fumes. “
“As a prime contractor for a multi-employer workplace, the employer failed to identify a regulatory compliance system, a high-risk violation,” WorkSafeBC wrote in a summary of its findings.
“The employer also failed to comply with written procedures for providing first aid at the scene. They were repeated violations.
BC Hydro responded to Glacier Media at press time.
The application and its subcontractors have faced a number of employee safety consequences in recent years, in connection with the Site C blank power project. From 2018 to 2020, Peace River Hydro Partners Construction Ltd. faced 3 six-figure consequences, according to WorkSafeBC records.
The company, which worked as BC Hydro’s main contractor at Site C, was penalized more than $1.63 million over the three-year period.
