Ben Chilwell hopes to emulate Chelsea legend Ashley Cole and admits that he is the ‘big reason’ for the transfer

The former Leicester player signed a lucrative five-year contract with the Blues on Wednesday from a 50 million pound contract.

Chilwell, 23, has great ambitions under Frank Lampard and is in a position to take inspiration from Blues legend Cole.

Cole spent eight years at Stamford Bridge before arriving in Rome in 2014.

He has won a Premier League title, a Champions League, 4 FA Cups, one League Cup and the Europa League.

Chilwell told Chelsea’s website: “It’s for me, I have this reference to what a left-back of Chelsea is.

“I grew up watching Ashley Cole play, so I know the reputation he has here and again. That’s a great explanation I sought to come by.

“I feel like I’m still young and I need that kind of career you have at Chelsea for me too.”

Chilwell also revealed how a verbal exchange with Lampard was more than enough to convince him to make a signal on the dotted line.

The former midfielder led Chelsea to fourth place in his first season to lead, but reinforced his roster with arrivals from Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

He added: “[Lampard was] important.

“Obviously, I wanted to play in a big club, that’s what everyone needs for their whole career, but talking to Frank before I came is one of the main reasons I was looking to come.

“It gave me a lot of confidence, he told me how well the formula fits with the way I play and that I’m a very smart guy with which you can communicate about things outside of football.

“I think it’s very important for a young player to have a coach with which he can get along and communicate.

“He loves young players very much, we have noticed that since he was here and told him a massive explanation of why he wanted to come.

“When you work with a coach who was a player, I think it’s important.

“He was a great player not just for Chelsea but for England as well.

“I hope you can in my career as long as I am and I hope you can give me a lot of recommendations and I hope to have a career as smart as him.

“When I spoke to the coach, he instilled in me what I already knew, that this formula fit me.

“When I watch Chelsea play, I look at the sides and think, “It’s the best thing for me, it’s my game in a game.”

“I’m looking ahead to get started and I look forward to many more years.”
