Benfica’s Joao Neves broke down in tears after the emotional tribute of his fans tonight at the Estadio da Luz.
The 19-year-old’s mother died last week after a long battle with cancer and the midfielder was emotional from the final whistle.
Benfica fans showed their support for Neves by chanting his call at the end of the match.
And the enthusiasm of his fans brought the young midfielder to tears.
Benfica drew 0-0 with Toulouse that night, which was enough to qualify for the next round.
Neves has played 38 times in all competitions for Benfica this year, despite being only 19 years old.
He has already been capped 3 times by Portugal.
Neves, a combative midfielder in Rodri’s mould, connected with a significant move of money to the Premier League over the summer and January.
United were interested in the midfielder last summer, but the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo in his position may end their interest in him.
He has also attracted interest from Arsenal, who are looking to update Thomas Partey this summer.
Neves broke into Benfica’s first team last year when he was just 18 years old to update the outgoing Enzo Fernandez, who signed for Chelsea on a £107m contract.
Benfica were in the Europa League play-offs after missing out on the Champions League this year.
In the March 16 circular, they will set out their warring sides.
