A new vintage occasion founded at Bicester Heritage will pay homage to the reminiscence of Colin McRae, 25 years after winning the name World Rally Champion.
The Classic Car Weekend (September 18-20) will feature vintage rally cars in action at the former airfield, topped by the Subaru Impreza WRC in which the Scottish yearned won the Q RAC Rally Network for the third time in 1997.
Meanwhile, a reproduction of his 1991 British Championship-winning Subaru Legacy, delivered through Rothmans, will also be available.
The new 3-day COVID-compliant festival will be held at Bicester Heritage in Oxfordshire and the site’s eight-day verification track will be used over 3 days.
In addition to the two Subarus tribute to McRae, Slowly Sideways will feature a number of vintage rally cars, adding Ford Escort RS1800, Porsche 911 and Renault Alpines, as well as Group B-era cars from the early 1980s. Classic racing cars will also be in action on the track.
It’s been 25 years since the Scot won the Network Q RAC Rally GB 1995 (below) to Britain’s first world rally champion.
Tragically, he died in a destination helicopter in 2007.
“Colin McRae will be a true hero and we are revered for celebrating his greatest success,” said exhibition director Bas Bungish.
“Colin’s impressive and absolutely committed driving taste has captured the hearts of millions of enthusiasts around the world and I’m sure the unique photographs and sounds of those mythical Subarus on the Bicester track will remind you of many glorious memories.”
