Prime Minister Boris Johnson is about to force Greater Manchester to introduce the highest point of coronavirus restrictions in England after the UK government failed to reach an agreement with local leaders on the length of money required for the region.
Mayor Andy Burnham and other Big Manchester officials had first asked for 75 million pounds of support, which then reduced to 65 million pounds, but the government presented them with 60 million pounds.
Then the Johnson government withdrew its offer, the BBC reported, meaning it is now in a position to act on its risk of imposing restrictions on the city area.
British Community Secretary Robert Jenrick said Tuesday: “I am disappointed that, despite the popularity of the seriousness of the situation, [Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham] is not ready to take the mandatory steps to get the virus spread under control in Greater Manchester and reached an agreement with the government.
“I have informed the prime minister that these discussions have concluded without agreement. “
Johnson planned to hold a press conference tuesday later to check out the new restrictions to be imposed on Manchester, which will be in place for at least 28 days.
Speaking at his own press convention in Manchester this afternoon, a visibly angry Burnham said that the money he had asked of the Johnson administration but that he had been rejected “was not about what we wanted, but what we needed” and said, “It’s just getting what we’re giving him and it’s unacceptable in a pandemic and a national crisis.
He said he needed more westminster cash to keep the other greater Manchesterers from falling into poverty, and told reporters: “What we saw today is a planned downward leveling act. Do they play poker with other people’s lives like a pandemic? Is that what this is about?
“I struggled with everything I had for the least source of income for other people in the city area,” Burnham said.
The new regulations for Manchester mean that other people cannot meet with members of other families inside.
All pubs, shops, casinos, bingo halls, adult play centers and comfortable play spaces that are not plentiful will be forced to close, but schools will remain open.
Manchester joins Liverpool and near Lancashire at the highest serious point of local blockade restrictions in the UK, with north-west England proceeding in one of the country’s peaks affected by new cases of coronavirus and hospitalizations.
