Borussia Dortmund cut Bayern Munich lead, Barcelona held by Granada – European round-up

Borussia Dortmund fought back from two goals down after a lacklustre start to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 and return some excitement to the Bundesliga title race.

Mahmoud Dahoud’s 89th-minute winner after Jude Bellingham equalised in the 86th put Dortmund six points behind Bayern Munich a day after the leaders lost 2-1 at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

An emotional Erling Haaland was involved in all three goals for Dortmund, who could have easily trailed by four goals in Frankfurt.

Colombian striker Rafael Borre opened the scoring with a free kick from Filip Kostic in the 15th minute, then doubled the lead 10 minutes later after a looser defense.

Evan Ndicka hit the post for Frankfurt before Dahoud gave Jesper Lindstrom a great chance as the break approached, but the midfielder shot wide.

Haaland and Julian Brandt offered some hope for the visitors with attempts around the hour mark, and Thorgan Hazard pulled a goal back soon after when Haaland sent him through.

The Norwegian was concerned before Thomas Meunier set up Jude Bellingham for the equaliser, and again before Dahoud scored the winning goal.

On the other hand, Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen lost problems after leading.

Patrik Schick’s 17th goal of the season was not enough for Leverkusen, who were fortunate to draw 2-2 against Union Berlin, as the visitors hit the post twice later.

Schick rewarded the home team’s early dominance with the opener five minutes before half-time – his ninth goal in five Bundesliga games.

However, the visitors equalised before the break. Lukas Hradecky made two fine saves in a row to shut out Christoph Trimmel and Kevin Behrens, but couldn’t prevent Grischa Promel from scoring on the third attempt.

Union coach Urs Fischer made two changes at half-time and Promel scored 4 minutes into the second half. Andreas Luthe denied Leverkusen three times.

Union’s Max Kruse hit the corner of the post with 12 minutes remaining before Jonathan Tah nevertheless equalized in the 84th minute with a header from Karim Bellarabi’s cross.

Union came within a goal of the winner that was already planned, with Andreas Voglsammer hitting the post, but then squandered a chance in stoppage time when Bastian Oczipka hit the post again.

Freiburg, who spent the winter break in the league in third place, drew 2-2 with relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld despite a two-goal lead thanks to Janik Haberer and Jeong Woo-yeong.

RB Leipzig overcame a number of coronavirus infections to beat 10-man Mainz 4-1.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart drew against bottom side Greuther Furth 0-0, while Augsburg were beaten 3-1 at Hoffenheim.

Ten-man Barcelona conceded a late goal to draw 1-1 at Granada after Dani Alves set up the opener in his first league game since returning to the club.

The 38-year-old sent a ball to Luuk de Jong for a header in the 57th minute.

But Granada rushed after teenager Gavi Paez booked a moment with 10 minutes remaining. Antonio Puertas scored the equalizer in the 89th minute when Barcelona were stuck in their own box.

Alves, who helped Barcelona win 23 trophies between 2008 and 2016, began his second term on Wednesday when third-department Linares fell 2-1 in the Copa del Rey.

De Jong’s goal was the defining moment in as many league games for the Dutch striker who has been linked with a conceivable move this month, but his failure left Barca in 6th position, having missed the chance to move up to 3rd and the Champions League positions.

Barcelona will then travel to Saudi Arabia to play a Clasico against Real Madrid on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup. Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao will play in the other semi-final.

In the end, Levante needed 20 games to claim their first win of the season, with Roberto Soldado and Jose Morales scoring in a 2-0 win over Mallorca.

The Valencian team’s last victory at the festival came against a lower department opponent in the Copa del Rey, before being eliminated in the next round by Alcoyano of the Third Division.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored his 12th goal in all competitions to help Real Sociedad beat Celta Vigo 1-0, ending a six-round winless streak and moving the San Sebastian side back to fourth.
