Borussia Dortmund delight as Niclas Füllkrug hat-trick helps hosts see off stubborn Bochum

Dortmund 3-1 Bochum Goals: 1-0 Stylo Füllkrug. 7′, 1-1 N. Schlotterbeck (ex. ) 45′, 2-1 Füllkrug 72′ (assist: Sabitzer), 3-1 Füllkrug 90′ 1

With a 100 percent record at the start of 2024, Dortmund knew that a third consecutive victory since the start of the year would help them advance to the Champions League places. If the “little Revierderthrough” on Matchday 19 against Bochum without the ailing trio of Gregor Kobel, Julian Brandt and Marco Reus caused concern, Dortmund’s quick start calmed nerves at home. Visiting goalkeeper Manuel Riemann’s foul on Donyell Malen inside the area gave Füllkrug the opportunity to score from the penalty spot for the second week in a row. The German foreigner calmly rolled the ball into the corner, scoring his seventh Bundesliga goal of the campaign. Bochum would have equalized shortly after if Erhan Mašović had touched a corner taken by Kevin Stöger, but the visitors’ big moment came just after Riemann deflected Marcel Sabitzer’s free kick. The hosts, who were never in complete control of the competition, paved the way for their rivals to come back. Taking advantage of poor Dortmund defending, Stöger and Patrick Osterhage combined to fatal effect, and the latter’s cross was met by Nico Schlotterbeck late on to tip over an Alexander Meyer. Maximilian Wittek then magnificently denied Malen to ensure the groups were ahead at half-time.

Bayern Munich closed the gap to Bayer Leverkusen to two points before both clubs announced new signings on a weekend when Deniz Undav and Niclas Füllkrug impressed for VfB and BVB respectively.

Franz Beckenbauer and Kay Bernstein were fondly remembered in Bavaria, Berlin and beyond, while Leverkusen pulled away from Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga…

Jadon Sancho may not have been happier after his return to Borussia Dortmund ended with a 3-0 win over Darmstadt.
