Borussia Dortmund’s Dario Scuderi returns after career-threatening leg break

Scuderi, now 20, was reportedly about to make his debut for Dortmund’s first team when he suffered a horrific left knee injury in a UEFA Youth League match against Legia Warsaw in September 2016.

The medical team feared the worst: at the time, his surgeon described the incident as “the worst injury imaginable. Almost everything was torn: the ligaments, all the muscles and tendons,” but Scuderi refused to throw in the towel.

Twenty-three months later, the Italian right-back made his long-awaited return as a substitute in the match so far in a friendly of the BVB reserves against Lüner SV.

History says a lot about Scuderi’s character, however, Dortmund deserves immense credit for the point he has given to a young player who can still achieve his dream of playing professionally.

As well as being with him at each and every step of his grueling rehabilitation, BVB ensured that, should the worst happen and he had to retire, Scuderi would have a career outside of football through the investment of his studies in sports management.

Class acts, the pair of them.
