Former Flamengo goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes has been sentenced to 22 years and 3 months in prison for orchestrating a plot to kill his lover and hide his remains.
The 28-year-old “meticulously calculated” the kidnapping, murder and murder of Eliza Samudio in 2010, a ruling said Friday morning.
Fernandes denied having fathered his son and disputed the child’s maintenance, but DNA tests showed the baby was his.
The State Court of Minas Gerais heard that Ms. Samudio’s frame delivered to dogs after strangulation.
Judge Marixa Fabiane Rodrigues Lopes said Fernandes was “cold, violent and reserved,” believing she could escape justice by hiding the body.
“Your personality is distorted and escapes the lowest standards of normality,” he said, according to Brazilian G1.
“The guilt of these crimes is intense and highly reprehensible.
“The victim orphaned a 4-month-old child.”
Earlier this week, Fernandes wept on the defendants’ bench and read a Bible, denying he organized the murder along with eight other people, his ex-wife Dayane Rodrigues.
Bruno, who set out to play at the 2014 World Cup, captain of the Flamengo team who won the Brazilian championship in 2009 and made 134 appearances for the club.
