Burnley-Liverpool LIVE!
Liverpool are back in the Premier League’s most sensible position, for at least 48 hours. The Reds survived a second-half scare at Turf Moor to beat long-suffering Burnley 2-0 in a festive Boxing Day match in Lancashire, taking the lead after just six minutes when Darwin Nunez scored beautifully with his foot from outside the box to end his club’s 12-goal drought.
Liverpool surely dominated the first half but could not find a further breakthrough when Mohamed Salah hit the crossbar and Burnley’s James Trafford made several strong saves, with Cody Gakpo’s powered winger being ruled out by a foul by Nunez on Charlie Taylor. Burnley were much better after the break but looked to have trailed 2-0 when Harvey Elliott put his foot in the back corner.
However, that effort was moot to Salah, who gave the impression of being driven by Jordan Beyer. Burnley were galvanised through the pitch and enjoyed their most productive era of the game thereafter, however replacement Johann Berg Gudmundsson squandered his golden opportunity earlier. Replacement Diogo Jota marked his return from injury with a sublime goal to close out three important points and send his team back. At best before Arsenal host West Ham in a London derby on Thursday night. Follow Liverpool vs Burnley live reaction below!

Liverpool are back at the top of the Premier League table, for at least 48 hours.
It’s time for Arsenal, who host West Ham in a London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.
Burnley remain five points adrift of safety in 19th.
Some difficult moments for Liverpool in this second half, but they end up being the price of victory.
Newcastle the visitors to Anfield on New Year’s Day, with Burnley facing a tough trip to Aston Villa to close out 2023 on Saturday.

92 mins: Five minutes of stoppage time as Berge heads to Burnley.
Liverpool fans now have a beautiful voice, and the outside sings songs about returning to the best at the table.
Kompany replaces Captain Brownhill with Ramsey, who is already fit.
19:18, George Flood
90 minutes: Signed, stamped and delivered! Jota is coming with a vengeance!
A great little shot around the corner from Diaz, with Jota close and challenging before firing through Trafford’s legs and from a tricky angle.
Liverpool are back in the Premier League’s most sensible position!
19:16, George Flood
87 mins: So close to Burnley’s equaliser!
Endo’s ill-fated pass after a foul on Gomez went through Bruun Larsen, who shot just wide of the post.
In the end, Diaz scores a goal, but the impressive Trafford rejects it with a great boot.
Great watch, this.
19:14, George Flood
86 mins: Lovely effort from Alexander-Arnold, who takes an Endo knock-down on his chest before firing a volley narrowly wide with Trafford at full stretch.
That would have been the purpose of ending this game.
19:13, George Flood
85 minutes: Two more changes from Kompany: Bruun Larsen and Redmond replace Amdouni and Foster.
Despite this functionality, Burnley ran out of time in the second half.
19:12, George Flood
83 mins: Jota for Nunez is Klopp’s latest change.
It’s Jota’s first appearance since suffering a muscle injury in the draw against Manchester City in November.
19:11 , George Flood
81 mins: Into the final 10 minutes at Turf Moor as Szoboszlai races through from midfield but ends up blazing off target.
19:08, George Flood
78 mins: Odobert is some talent for Burnley as he comes forward and ends up firing wide of the back post – still no efforts on target from the hosts.
Quansah then does enough to deny Amdouni the role of last man.
Redmond are on the verge of replacing Burnley, but have now been told to sit back down.
19:06, George Flood
77 mins: Alexander-Arnold mixes with Quansah and then takes Foster off, receiving Liverpool’s first of the night.
No one bets on Brownhill’s free throw hitting the post and falling to safety.
19:05, George Flood
74 mins: Replays show it was a ball to the back stick that Szoboszlai tried to turn back into the six-yard box but ended up inadvertently clearing it.
Liverpool now have a free-kick in position after O’Shea fouled Nunez, which is then stopped by a brave Trafford goalkeeper at the Uruguayan’s feet.
19:01, George Flood
72 mins: Liverpool have knocked out this Turf Moor crowd and scored a few other passes, but substitute Szoboszlai can’t go home.
We want to see this one again!

Here’s Harvey Elliott’s purpose and offside resolution that kept this game alive. . .

18:58, George Flood
69 minutes: This is the most productive period of the game for Burnley so far and they pulled it off, subsidized by a raucous crowd.
Liverpool reeled and gave the ball away everywhere, with Berge firing wide after a Van Dijk header and substitute Gudmundsson then heading wide of the post after being beautifully spotted by Odobert.
It was 1-1. A huge, huge chance for Burnley rejected.
18:56, George Flood
67 mins: Diaz, Szoboszlai and Jones are all on for Liverpool.
Off go Gravenberch, Elliott and Gakpo.
18:53, George Flood
64 minutes: It will be a desirable final half of the hour with Burnley now gaining some momentum and still trailing by a single goal.
Klopp makes a triple substitution in a bid to regain some momentum.
18:51, George Flood
61 mins: Gudmundsson, back in form, is transferred via Kompany.
The treasure is gone.
18:50, George Flood
59 mins: Suddenly Burnley are galvanised and Van Dijk is forced to concede the corner.
Turf Moor roared as O’Shea’s header deflected off Nunez.
Liverpool counter-attack from the next, Trafford went a mile to draw a blank.
Confident goalkeeping!
18:46, George Flood
57 mins: The VAR asks the referee to go to the monitor and the goal is duly disallowed.
Replays also show that Beyer may have sensed what was about to happen there and gave Salah a little push to ensure he was offside!
I’m sure I’ve noticed this before!
In short, 1-0 against Liverpool, with just over an hour to go. . .
18:43, George Flood
55 mins: Liverpool now do have their second goal as Gravenberch tees up Elliott for a smart side-footed finish right into the bottom corner!
But hang on, I think Salah was beyond the last defender there and possibly distracting Trafford.
This will be checked and discarded. . .
18:40 , George Flood
51 mins: A quiet start to the second half with Liverpool looking to get the ball into the box but Burnley keeping company so far.
18:34, George Flood
Back underway at Turf Moor!
Will Liverpool be able to convert their dominance into additional goals, or will Burnley return after largely weathering the storm?
Come on. . .
18:30 , George Flood
Darwin Nunez remains a moot figure on Merseyside.
Can that brilliant first result – his eighth goal of the season for the club and first in thirteen games – now spark a consistent scoring streak?
Liverpool will want him to partner Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt in January.

Half-time
A very strong game from Liverpool that saw them dominate the starting line-up (69%) and create chances: their 8 shots on target (14 in total) mark the most in a game all season.
But Trafford was for Burnley and they were only one goal ahead at half-time.
The hosts aren’t there yet.
18:15, George Flood
45 mins: Liverpool continue to dominate, as we have two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half.
18:13, George Flood
42 mins: Burnley is cut back and Elliott clings to a deflected pass to spot Salah, who is denied by Trafford.
The former Manchester City goalkeeper then holds the ball as it deflects the defender’s goal.
A slice of good fortune for Burnley there.
18:11 , George Flood
41 mins: Liverpool’s corner is headed away by Foster only as far as Gomez, who thrashes an effort that is deflected on its way over by Beyer.
The moment of the loose kick is claimed with a bit of luck through Trafford.
18:10 , George Flood
39 mins: Some more important symptoms of Burnley in the final minutes, but they need an expanding Trafford to dunk low to their right to prevent a well-hit low effort from Endo on the edge of the box.
18:07, George Flood
35 mins: Burnley’s most productive attacks in the final minutes came to Vitinho down the right, with his first cross forcing Alisson to paint to prevent it from sneaking under the crossbar.
It falls safely past the back post.
Burnley have had some bright moments going forward despite Liverpool’s dominance, but there is no composure or quality in the final third at the moment.
6:04 p. m. , George Flood
33 mins: Another huge left-off for Burnley as Taylor can’t cut out a long pass for Salah and the Egyptian rifles a powerful left-footed effort against the woodwork with Trafford beaten!
Looked like that hit Salah’s arm though, so it may well have been disallowed anyway.
18:02, George Flood
32 mins: Burnley get forward down the right but Odobert’s mishit cross fails to pick out a claret and blue shirt in the middle.
Trafford now handed ownership back to Liverpool in a dangerous move after a panic clearance.
18:00 , George Flood
29 mins: Arrival on the pitch is confirmed.
Liverpool are still leading 1-0, much to the relief of Vincent Kompany and the home crowd.
Klopp is satisfied on the touchline.
17:59, George Flood
28 minutes: GOOAAAAA. . . NO!
Liverpool put the ball back in the net before the 30th minute after a thunderous shot from Gakpo.
Trafford made a great initial save from Gakpo, but Burnley couldn’t clear their lines and there was a foul from Nunez on Taylor just before Gakpo hit it again.
The VAR will take a look, I doubt they will overturn it.
17:56 , George Flood
26 mins: Liverpool now pass the ball around and probe patiently in search of another opening, but this time Burnley form a rigid defensive shape and firmly shut the door.
They want more defensive and positional field if they want to get back to that situation.
Liverpool surely dominated possession, and Núñez was whistled for offside as they tried to lose the divisive Uruguayan again.
17:54, George Flood
24 minutes: Although his blank sheet of paper is already ruined, you still can’t be inspired through Trafford’s decision-making and mastery of his box.
Burnley looked strong again, but Foster failed to spot the in-form Odobert to his right and Ted’s chance.
17:52 , George Flood
22 mins: The first yellow card of the night goes to Berge for bringing down Gravenberch.
Not Norwegian.
17:52, George Flood
21 mins: Although they have had their moments so far, everything is already very worried and frenetic and it is already Burnley’s last chance.
Trafford comes out to deny Gakpo as the latter tries to steer in Elliott’s deflected shot following a give and go with Nunez on the edge of the box.
Gomez can’t keep the attack alive.
17:49, George Flood
19 mins: Taylor, once again, misses Nunez’s ball and the Uruguayan advances down the right before firing a dangerous low cross into the box from six yards.
Gakpo is very muscular thanks to Vitinho.
17:48, George Flood
17 mins: Another Burnley corner gets nowhere before Taylor gets into all sorts of trouble looking to play out from the back.
Liverpool got hold of it, but Nunez couldn’t turn it around before a late hacked clearance stopped the hosts.
17:46 , George Flood
Here’s Darwin Núñez’s first goal. . .
It was a smart start for Liverpool against Burnley. Darwin Núñez won the ball on the edge of dominance and it was the striker’s best first half #PLonPrime #BURLIV pic. twitter. com/8Qd6gTEDgQ

17:44, George Flood
14 mins: Such a furious tempo to this game in the first 15 minutes.
A brazen challenge from Beyer on Gravenberch is reviewed and cleared via VAR, much to the chagrin of a lively Klopp on the touchline.
17:42 , George Flood
12 mins: It’s a start-to-finish affair at the moment, Burnley now counter-attack with a bit of one-touch football before captain Brownhill deflects a low shot that narrowly misses the post.
I, Alisson, had covered that quite a bit.
17:41, George Flood
11 mins: Gakpo recovers this Burnley defence time and time again in the early stages: a ball over the most sensible causes a lot of damage.
He lashes a wild volley off target from inside the box before a heavy touch from the Dutchman curtails Liverpool’s latest attack.
17:39, George Flood
9 mins: Burnley have a good game but now we have to be very careful.
Gakpo almost made it to the end before Trafford made a great save after a creative effort from Salah.
17:36, George Flood
6 mins: An early goal for the Reds!
Núñez set up through Gakpo after a clever merit played by the referee and the Uruguayan team got into the back corner for the first time as soon as they left the area.
What an ending. Just what I needed.
17:35, George Flood
6 mins: Good luck to Burnley!
Amdouni took the lead but lost his composure and confidence when he shot wide of the far post.
17:35, George Flood
4 mins: Liverpool advance with a clever move and a clean shot discovers Elliott, whose low shot is well deflected by Trafford.
Salah looks for the rebound, he is marked offside.
17:33, George Flood
3 mins: Tresor and Amdouni are looking lively for Burnley early on.
It’s been a bright and positive start from the hosts.
17:31 , George Flood
1 min: Burnley are in the spotlight, attacking Liverpool early on.
Tresor is the main danger man as the hosts don’t quite get a shot off and Liverpool hastily scramble clear.
17:30 , George Flood
Let’s go on Turf Moor!
Will Liverpool return to the most sensible of the Premier League on Boxing Day?
Burnley in their burgundy and blue kits, with Liverpool in white and green.
Paul Tierney is today’s referee.
17:26, George Flood
Meet the Turf Moor teams!
Lots of noise around and a packed space on Boxing Day.
17:15, George Flood
Final preparations at Turf Moor!
Burnley fans will have been keeping an eye on this match at Bramall Lane, where two late passes of their own saw Sheffield United go from 2-1 down to lose 3-2 at home to Luton.
A brutal, brutal result for the Blades, but the Hatters are looking like making a real bid for survival.
Burnley now have five free points from defence in 19th place, while Luton are in 18th place.
16:52, George Flood
Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has made a substitution in the undercover squad for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham.
It comes in midfield, where Mike Tresor is preferred to Jacob Bruun Larsen.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Aaron Ramsey are fit enough for the bench, replacing Anass Zaroury and Michael Obafemi.
Still no Jack Cork though.
16:45, George Flood
So that’s five Liverpool changes from the team that started the huge title showdown with Arsenal at the weekend, with Joe Gomez replacing the injured Kostas Tsimikas at left-back as expected.
Ibrahima Konate drops to the bench while Jarell Quansah joins Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones are replaced in midfield by Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch, while Luis Diaz is on the bench after a knee injury, while Darwin Nunez is in attack.
There’s still no Alexis Mac Allister, but Diogo Jota has enough of a match to be named as a replacement.
16:31, George Flood
Starting XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, van Dijk, Gomez, Elliott, Endo, Gravenberch, Salah, Gakpo, Nunez
Substitutes: Konate, Diaz, Szoboszlai, Jones, Jota, Chambers, McConnell, Kelleher, Bradley
16:31 , George Flood
Starting XI: Trafford, Vitinho, O’Shea, Beyer, Taylor, Ndayishimiye, Berge, Brownhill, Odobert, Foster, Amdouni
Substitutes: Gudmundsson, Rodríguez, Roberts, Redmond, Ramsey, Cullen, Bruun Larsen, Delcroix, Muric
16:23, George Flood
Just over five minutes now until we get the official team news and lineups from Turf Moor.
Stay tuned!
16:18, George Flood
Nineteenth-placed Burnley went into the three Christmases out of safety, but that tally now extends after Chris Wood’s hat-trick secured a surprise 3-1 win for Nottingham Forest at Newcastle earlier.
Luton also recently led against compatriots Sheffield United, a result that would keep them in 18th place but four points ahead of Burnley and only one Everton.
The gap between the bottom Blades and Burnley of late stands at two points.
16:05, George Flood
Here’s how things are going at the top of the Premier League ahead of kick-off at Turf Moor.
After the 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday, Liverpool are still one point behind Arsenal, albeit with a slightly higher goal difference.
That means they just want to beat tonight to get back to the sensible before the Gunners return to action at home to West Ham on Thursday night.
The best Aston Villa are also just one point behind the most sensible and Liverpool only have goal difference as things stand.
Unai Emery’s side would end the evening top of the table if Liverpool let slip into trouble and get a result contrary to Manchester United’s defeat at Old Trafford when the game kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
15:53, George Flood
It looks like the festive spirit is not in short supply at Turf Moor this evening…
15:48 , George Flood
After such a brilliant debut campaign, it’s been a tough second season in charge at Burnley for Vincent Kompany.
However, the Manchester City legend is asking for the challenge of derailing the bid for Liverpool’s name tonight.
“I don’t think I’m offending by saying I don’t think we’re favourites for this game,” he said.
“We have to take the positives from this (Fulham) game and try to have a moment. There’s no point in getting to that point if you don’t enjoy the prospect of betting against those teams.
“I hope the players and fans enjoy it and that it’s an opportunity for us. “
He added: “The credit I have (managing Burnley) is history together. We’ve won a lot of games and in those moments we’ve said who we need to be when things get tougher. “
“It’s about how you prepare, how you are able to recover and in the end you get moments like (against Fulham). “
15:32, George Flood
In fact, no Premier League manager has appreciated A to Turf Moor over the years, but this season, so far, has been the complete opposite of a castle: Burnley have lost 8 of their first nine home games in the top flight since promotion. and they have taken five additional issues from their travels.
Liverpool have won seven of their last eight Premier League trips to those regions, with the exception of 2016.
Burnley showed their potential away from home with Saturday’s shock 2-0 win at Fulham with Wilson Odobert and Sander Berge’s Craven Cottage surprising, Klopp clearly relishing a tough challenge tonight.
“I don’t want Burnley’s result [against Fulham] to show their quality,” he added.
“Burnley could have easily had much more points because they had so many good spells in the games where they never saw the situation off, because of young players and some decisions.
“If they could put an end to those situations, they would definitely win more games. I have a lot of respect for Vinny (Vincent Kompany) because he helps continue to push their concept. “
“I am inspired by what they are doing and we know that if you win once and return to your stadium you need to win again, and that is what we expect from them. “
15:26, George Flood
Jurgen Klopp has played down the idea of a left-back crisis at Liverpool with Tsimikas now joining Robertson on the sidelines, but knows his side will need to start getting a bit of luck on the injury front in their title push.
Robertson is still expected to return sometime in January, but until then, Klopp is keen to keep new de facto left-back Joe Gomez out of harm’s way.
If he were also injured, Liverpool would have to rely on the teenage duo of Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon.
“Can Joe play all the games now until I don’t know when?I don’t know, we’ll have to see,” Klopp said.
“Robbo will be back (next month) and Kostas will definitely be out for a long time. I haven’t had time to think about it yet, but it’s hard for us now.
“You have injuries sometimes and you have to accept all of them, but a broken collarbone is really bad because it takes so long to heal.
“Robbo had another injury, but it also takes him a long time to recover.
“We all know we want luck in those moments and now we’ve been tasked with making sure we put Joey in cotton wool and make sure he’s in position for the game. “
15:13 , George Flood
The visitors would probably not have everything to their liking against a team capable of playing football in front and passing.
But they have the strength to bolster them with a smart press and check their luck at the counter.
Liverpool to win, 3-1.
15:12, George Flood
Liverpool may be without Luis Diaz tonight after the Colombian winger suffered a small knee problem against Arsenal on Saturday.
Kostas Tsimikas has also joined Jurgen Klopp’s list of absentees after breaking his collarbone at the weekend following a collision with Bukayo Saka, Joe Gomez will arrive at left-back tonight with Andy Robertson still out following shoulder surgery.
This match probably comes too soon for Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota, while Joel Matip, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic are long absent.
15:07, George Flood
It is possible that Burnley will get a boost thanks to the return of trio Jack Cork, Aaron Ramsey and Johann Berg Gudmundsson for tonight’s difficult project at Turf Moor.
Midfielders Cork and Ramsey are facing delayed fitness tests due to calf and knee problems respectively, while veteran Icelandic winger Gudmundsson was sent off in the draw at Brighton on December 9 due to an unspecified issue, missing the following games against Everton and Fulham.

Liverpool head to Burnley this evening for a festive Boxing Day clash as the heavy favourites to go back above Arsenal to the Premier League summit – for a couple of days at least.
Turf Moor has been a very satisfying hunting ground for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds over the years, with enough of a point tonight for name contenders to overtake the Gunners before Mikel Arteta’s side, who played a thrilling draw at Anfield on Saturday, Return. into action with a potentially tricky London derby against West Ham on Thursday.
But Burnley seem to have another proposition at the moment, stunning Fulham with two surprising goals at Craven Cottage last time out to give Vincent Kompany’s men new hope in their war against an early return to the Championship.
Today’s kick-off is at 17:30 GMT, so stay tuned for the latest team news and updates!
